Big Milestone Reached! | User Survey

May 18, 2022, 7:33 a.m.

Hello All!

It's been a while since the last update, and I'm happy to finally be emailing you again. Only two weeks left until the end of the public participation period (more about that below). Things are going well!

User Survey Open

If you participated in the project (or just have some feedback on it), I'd really appreciate a response on this questionnaire: https://tiny.cc/lahmg-survey. It's also available on the project site. One of the objectives of this endeavor was not only to allow people to georeference a lot of maps, but to learn about what makes them interested in this in the first place. Thank you in advance!

Status Update

Last week, we passed an incredible milestone on the website: all 276 of the volumes that I made available at the outset have been started! This means that someone has "loaded" them in and begun preparing and georeferencing their content. As for the actual documents, there are now 2,700+ of them in the system, and almost 1,500 of them have been georeferenced. A lot.

You may be wondering, how many of the volumes have been fully georeferenced? Well, I have just added a nice little pie symbol in the volumes list, so you can see for yourself on the Browse page.

Sorting the volume list based on this column, it looks like ~35 are 100% done, but a lot more are almost there. In some of these cases, we may never georeference every piece of a volume because some maps show isolated buildings that are long gone and really can't be located. Nevertheless, these numbers are all very exciting. Again, a huge thank you to not only the stupendous WallyKitty, but all of you who have pitched in thus far: CaroOkay, sb730_NOLA, eliotjordan, nolancrees, brendan, and barryg, to name a few 🙂

Nearing the End (??)

The official public participation period will end on June 1st, but that is only so I can collect data and finish analysis. You'll still be able to georeference content through June, and I plan to at least keep the exploration aspect of the site available much longer-term. I have some enhancements in mind to improve the "browseability" of the site that I'm really looking forward to working on, and I am beginning to look around for grants and such to continue the project (and add more volumes!). If you or your organization would be interested in collaborating, I'd love to hear from you.

Until next time,
-- Adam
